County of Los Angeles Automates Field With PDAs

The PDA market for PenRight! developers is heating up. Recently, Hampton Royce announced that the County of Los Angeles, Department of Building and Safety has begun automating its field inspectors with Casios Z-7000 and their SpecPro 2000 field inspection application. Housed in an all weather case, the Spec Pro 2000 system consists of the Z-7000, a PenRight! configured 5MB SunDisk flash memory card, the Spec Pro 2000 software and an optional printer.

Inspection information taken from the field is seemlessly uploaded to the county's backend inspection tracking system using either a data card or serial communication. Word from the end user sounds promising, "The low cost, lightweight PDAs have surpassed all of our expectations, said Marshall Levinson, Senior Systems Analyst of the Department of Building and Safety. "The system not only makes their work more efficient and less costly, but also provides numerous benefits in terms of speed, accuracy and quality of data." added Levinson.

Hampton Royces Brad McDowell says, "PDAs get high marks for their low cost, light weight, and long battery life. They make excellent tools to perform specific tasks. Up to now, the problem has been in providing truly useful, industrial-strength application software to really take advantage of the PDAs strengths. We have found PenRight! to be an ideal development tool for the PDA. Bottom line is that we can deliver powerful industrial software running on very low cost hardware. We're happy and our customers are happy."

Nettechs InstantRF Makes Going Wireless A Breeze

PenRight! and wireless communications--a perfect match. And now with Nettechs InstantRF Workbench, PenRight! developers can enable their applications for any wireless data network quickly and with minimum effort.

Nettech InstantRF Workbench is a family of APIs that enable developers to quickly add two-way wireless connectivity to dispatch, database, e-mail or any other mobile application. Linking Nettechs libraries to PenRight! applications is simple, just ask Roadshows Sr. Software Engineer, Wayne Vanderpool, By using PenRight! and Nettech I was able to get fully-functional prototypes live and on-the-air in less than a week. Designed from the outset for optimized wireless communications, InstantRF Workbench includes radio modem drivers (RFMlib), a host/LAN gateway with programmable agent technology (RFgate), and a high-performance wireless data transport protocol (RFlink).

Write it quickly. The InstantRF Workbench APIs contain only a few function calls. In fact, basic communication is as simple as Open-Send-Receive-Close. Source code examples are included with each toolkit to get developers started quickly.

Write is once. Because the InstantRF Workbench APIs are network-independent, applications only need to be written once -- yet have the flexibility to run on different networks including RAM Mobile Data/Mobitex, ARDIS/DataTAC, CDPD, private data networks, and circuit-switched (wireless and cellular) without changing a single line of code.

Maximize performance. Unlike TCP/IP, Remote Procedure Calls, or other tools for distributed processing, InstantRF Workbench is designed from the outset to be optimized for wireless communications. As a result, InstantRF Workbech gives users maximum performance and the broadest range of wireless features.

Cone Software was one of the first PenRight! developers to utilize the Nettech solution in an application developed for Conrail Railroad. Four years later the Conrail application has blossomed into a corporate wide role out totaling 550 plus units, with hundreds of more units schedule for role out in 95.

Nettech software is used today by RAM/Mobitex, ARDIS/DataTAC developers around the world. And recently, the entire InstantRF Workbench family was selected by Motorola to form the foundation for its AirMobile Software product line. Successes like these speak for themselves.

PenRight! Applications Can Now Use Palm Computings Graffiti Recognition

PenRight! developers can now use Palm Computing's Graffiti handwriting recognition engine as the method of text input for their PenRight! applications. Since introducing the product last year, Graffiti has received high marks from end users and industry analysts. Targeted to white collar as well as blue collar workers, Graffiti users learn a custom alphabet, but once learned the rate of recognition is extremely impressive.

The Graffiti handwriting recognition engine reads printed letters from a custom alphabet. Palm Computing has achieved close to one hundred percent handwriting recognition by reducing the characters of the alphabet to a single stroke.

The time necessary to become familiar with Graffiti's custom characters has averaged between 20 to 30 minutes. Although it may not be right for all users a large portion of the pen industry can benefit from Graffiti. Many users are currently using Graffiti with their PDAs making it a naturally fit for anyone creating applications for Casio's Z-7000. Additionally, PenRight!'s implementation of Graffiti allows users to print directly into the writing field, opposed to being required to write each letter in a small box, which is how users are currently required to use Graffiti.
